Container stuffing meaning, in plain English

What container stuffing and unstuffing actually mean.

Container stuffing is the job of planning, loading, distributing and securing cargo inside a shipping container so it travels safely - the opposite of just throwing boxes in until it is full. Container unstuffing (also called devanning, or de-stuffing) is the reverse: emptying an inbound container, checking the goods against the packing list, and moving them on to storage or delivery.

Search "container stuffing" and you mostly find global load calculators and shipping-line guides. What you cannot easily find is a Singapore team that will actually turn up and do the work. That is the gap Relo fills: real container stuffing Singapore exporters and container unstuffing Singapore importers can book by the job - with our own forklift, lashing equipment and crew, at your warehouse or at the port/depot.

One team, in and out of the box

Plan → load → lash → seal - and the reverse on arrival

Because Relo also runs haulage and warehousing, the same firm that stuffs or unstuffs your container can also move it and store the goods.

Stuffing a container for export

Stuffing container loads bound for export is about more than filling space. We plan the load, distribute the weight, protect fragile items and lash everything down so it cannot shift at sea - then seal it ready for customs and haulage to the port.

Capacities are nominal ISO container reference specs (20ft GP ~33 m³ / ~28 t; 40ft GP ~67 m³ / ~27 t; 40ft HC ~76 m³ / ~26 t). Real pallet counts vary with cargo height, stacking and weight limits - Relo confirms on survey.

The stuffing process, step by step

How Relo stuffs a container in Singapore.

The same discipline a shipping line builds into a guide - delivered on your floor or at the depot, by the crew that turns up.

Step 01

Survey & load plan

We check the cargo, its weight and volume, and the container type, then build a load plan - what goes where, heaviest on the bottom, weight balanced front-to-back.

Step 02

Palletise & protect

Where it helps, goods are palletised and wrapped; fragile items get cushioning and are kept clear of the doors. Right packing now prevents damage at sea.

Step 03

Stuff & distribute weight

Our crew loads to the plan with a forklift and pallet jack, keeping the centre of gravity low and the weight even so the container stays stable in transit.

Step 04

Lash & secure

Gaps are filled with dunnage (airbags, timber); straps and lashing lock pallets to the walls and floor so nothing shifts on the road or the vessel.

Step 05

Seal & document

We verify the load against the packing list, fit a tamper-evident seal, record the final weight and hand over the paperwork for customs.

Step 06

Haulage to port

Relo's own prime mover and trailer can take the sealed container to the port or depot - one company from the floor to the gate.

Containers & cargo we handle

Most container types, most kinds of cargo.

Container stuffing services for export and container unstuffing services on import - for the boxes and goods that move through Singapore, whether it is a full container load or a few pallets to consolidate.

Dry / general purpose

Standard 20ft and 40ft dry containers - the workhorse for cartons, palletised goods, consumer products and spares.

High-cube, open-top & flat-rack

Extra-height 40ft HC for volume, open-top for top-loaded cargo, and flat-rack for out-of-gauge or oversized items that will not fit a closed box.

Reefer & temperature-sensitive

Refrigerated containers stuffed with care for perishables and goods that must stay within a temperature range from door to door.

Palletised & loose cartons

Whether your goods arrive on pallets or as loose cartons, we plan the stow, palletise where it pays, and stuff the container to use the space.

Machinery & project cargo

Heavy or awkward machinery, equipment and project cargo - secured and lashed for the loads it will see in transit.

FCL & LCL consolidation

A full container load to yourself, or LCL where we consolidate your cargo with others - we advise which is cheaper for your volume.

Why book Relo for this

A container crew, not a middleman.

Own forklift, gear and crew

We do not sub-contract the work and mark it up. Our own equipment and trained crew keep the job under one roof - and the cost honest.

At your premises or at the port/depot

We come to your warehouse, or handle the container stuffing and unstuffing at the depot - whichever is faster and cheaper for your shipment.

Lashing, dunnage & weight distribution done right

Cargo that arrives intact is cheaper than cargo that arrives damaged. We secure loads properly so they do not shift at sea or on the road.

One team for the whole chain

The same firm that stuffs or unstuffs your container can haul it, store the goods and deliver them - no second vendor to coordinate.

Container stuffing & unstuffing FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Container stuffing is the process of planning, loading, distributing and securing cargo inside a shipping container so it ships safely - the container stuffing meaning most people miss is that it is about weight distribution and securing, not just filling space. A "stuffing container" job done properly includes a load plan, dunnage and lashing, and a sealed, documented container ready for customs.

Stuffing is loading goods into a container for export; unstuffing is unloading them out of an inbound container on import. The unstuffing container meaning (also called devanning or de-stuffing) covers breaking the seal where allowed, emptying the box, checking goods against the packing list, and moving them to storage or delivery. Relo does both.

Both. We can bring the crew and forklift to your own premises, or handle the work at the port/depot - whichever is faster and cheaper for your cargo. Tell us where the container will be and we will advise.

As a rough guide, a 20ft general-purpose container holds about 33 m³ and up to ~28 tonnes (around 10 standard pallet positions); a 40ft about 67 m³ and ~27 tonnes (around 20 pallets); a 40ft high-cube about 76 m³ with the same floor but more height. Real figures depend on cargo, stacking and weight limits - use the load estimator above as a starting point.

Yes. We can supply a trained stuffing/unstuffing crew on its own, or the full package with forklift, lashing equipment and haulage. See our manpower supply option if you only need extra hands.

Where your cargo requires Singapore Customs supervision for sealing or unstuffing, we work to that process and coordinate the unstuffing accordingly. Share the cargo and clearance details and we will confirm exactly what applies to your shipment.

Yes - it is core to the job. We fill gaps with dunnage (airbags, timber), strap and lash pallets to the container, and load so the weight is balanced. Properly secured cargo is what stops damage in transit.

It is quoted per job, based on the number and size of containers, the volume and nature of the cargo, where it is done (your site or the depot), and the crew and equipment needed. Tell us the shipment and you get a written price - no hidden third-party mark-up.

One partner, the whole chain

Add the rest of the move when you need it.

Container stuffing and unstuffing is one service inside Relo. The same coordinator can fold in haulage, warehousing or moving - one fleet, one invoice, no new vendor to onboard.
